I have just survived two weeks of horror trying to install a usb adsl modem
on a 9, 10.1.3, and Jaguar....

No when it says Mac compatible it does not mean Mac OS 8 and up. My ISP
recommended a Netcomm usb adsl modem that I bought through them as they
assured me that it work for Mac OS X. Dumb me never questions which OS X
they were talking about. When I unpacked the modem and read the instructions
it advised me that it only supported OS 9 and OS 10.1 (not 10.2). Luckily
I was installing this on an iMac slot load that was just being used as a
server and did not have any data on it. I reinstalled 10.1... Installed the
modem and a window pop up:

You need to upgrade to 10.1.3. I did. The same window just kept appearing.
Please upgrade to 10.1.3.

I have tried everything to no avail. Even downgraded to 9 still nothing. The
modem does not get recognised. My ISP does not want to take it back either
as I made the mistake (under their advice) to buy it and they dont take
responsibility.

Today I went and bought an ethernet modem. It was installed in 5 minutes and
I am now happily surfing with adsl.

The following sentence made me jump and write this comments:

"Nothing to do with Jaguar ... if it's Mac-compatible at all, it's
compatible with Jag (and every other flavour of 9 or X)."

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Mac OS compatible does NOT mean all Mac OS
compatible at all. When you ask about compatibility BE SPECIFIC.

Nothing to do with Jaguar ... if it's Mac-compatible at all, it's
compatible with Jag (and every other flavour of 9 or X).

Technically speaking, ANY usb modem should work with Mac OS 8.6 and up.
However, in order for it to work it will need a driver. Not every
company bothers to write a driver for Mac. Ergo, some USB modems won't
work.

Bottom line: buy a USB modem that offers Mac compatibility on the box.
