So...I now have two options - either erase the drive and start over (after
backing up the HD of course) or buying a disk repair program.

I was seriously considering Disk Warrior for these problems but are Drive
10, Tech Tool or Norton any better ?

I am a huge advocate of DiskWarrior and sincerely believe it to be a better program (for what it does) than Drive 10 (which is excellent for some things as well) and Norton (which I no longer trust).

However, the time to buy DiskWarrior is BEFORE you start having problems this severe. If you have the means and time to back up your user-created data, I would recommend a complete erase and reinstall of the system software. It's free and effective, and by erasing the drive you can eliminate the possibility that it's a bad hard drive that's giving you problems (unlikely).

In making this recommendation (which I hate to do because it's such a "PC" kind of fix), I assume you have NOT recently added RAM to the machine, or are hot-plugging in unpowered USB hubs, or anything like that. I assume that your system was at one point working correctly and, without you adding anything that would draw suspicion, it has either slowly or rapidly devolved into this state.

Once you've done this and restored your system and applications, you definitely *should* invest in a program such as DiskWarrior or Drive 10.

The iTunes Music Store has sold five MILLION songs in TWO months, more than all other legal download services have sold in TWO YEARS. If they can maintain that average over the course of a year, Apple will sell more music than any other retail music source. And that's BEFORE you add in countries outside the US, and Windows users. Woah.
