My experience (on the 333 iMac) is not consistent with Apple's info.

When my start-up disk is set to OS 9:
Option key down at start-up results in OS 9 start-up.
X key down at start-up results in OS 9 start-up.
D key down at start-up results in OS X start-up. (Great tip!)

When my start-up disk is set to OS X:
Option key down at start-up results in OS X start-up.
D key down at start-up results in OS X start-up.
