Yes, that's probably the culprit. While OS X disks are "generic," meaning they work on any model Mac, the OS 9 component is model-specific. You need to either install from a set of iMac system CDs, or you need to purchase a "generic/retail" set of CDs.


Since you have your systems partitioned, I believe there IS a key sequence you can use to "force" it to boot off the other system, but I'm afraid I don't know what it is anymore ... did you try command-option-shift-delete? I think that was what it USED to be to make the Mac look for an alternate boot device ...
