Sorry, just saw that you did say you were using OS X...at any rate, to answer your question, you won't need anything "special"...just an appropriately-sized IDE drive.

The bigger drive is NOT a waste of money...you'll just need to
partition the drive into volumes that your OS WILL recognize...it's
really no different than what you would need to do when installing OS X
(you don't say which OS you're running), which, on older machines,
required being installed in the first 8 Gb of drive space. In my case,
that meant partitioning the drive into a 7.5 Gb volume for the install
and a 110 Gb+ volume for everything else. When it comes to drives,
BIGGER is NEVER a waste of money...8-)

well, actually... the ATA bus on this iMac will not recognize any space on a disk beyond 128GB. doesn't matter how you partition it. this is part is a hardware limitation. "partitioning" is mostly for human consumption, though there are some exceptions (such as the 8GB OS X boot restriction on this model). an ATA bus isn't sophisticated enough to address disk space beyond somewhere in the vicinity of > 128GB.

basically... the method ATA/66 uses to count disk space is only capable of counting up to ~128 billion bytes. the hardware just can't go any higher. later revisions of the ATA architecture upped the ante, allowing the computer to address more disk space.
