By all means install 10.2.6. It's a big speed improvement over 10.1 It will run fine on your G3 600 iMac. You can buy 10.2 reasonably now then use Apple's software updates to get to 10.2.6
I had put OS 10.1 on and it was so much more sluggish than OS 9.2.1 that I
took it off entirely.
My own guesstimate would be that it will run on a G3 600, perhaps with some compromises vs a G4 or G5. Try the 10.2.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
