Agree or disagree X is the biggest division I have seen in Mac users from my 1st 128k machine.
How soon people forget the brouhaha over System 7. Just as vicious, JUST as stupid. If not more so.
I remember when I contacted the makers of Sargon III and asked "When will there be an update for Sargon III to work in OS 7" and was told rather bluntly that they had no intention of EVER updating to System 7.
Anyone remember that company?
People get down right nasty if you look sideways at X in certain circles, and the whole switch could have been done better, easier, friendlier, more well more Mac like.
I completely disagree. The OS 9 finder feels stilted and limiting and I cringe every time I am faced with it. I mean, _ICK_. OS X's User Experience is MUCH better, classier, and useful.
why the radical change from the previous Macs custom ability and ease of use.
I can do _EVERYTHING_ in the OS X finder with two windows open. In Panther, I can do 90% of everything with ONE window open. That's simply not possible in OS 9. And my neophyte relatives who aren't computer users never even have to use the finder windows at all. Downloads appear on their desktop, they drag them to the trash. They use the dock to launch apps, and they use "recent items" to open up the few Appleworks documents they have. Eveything else is integrated into an application. Email, iPhoto, iTunes, Safari. They aren't even conscious of the finder existing.
Also, OS X is MUCH easier to approach for new users than OS 9 (or 8, etc).
OS 9 through all the 10s x 3 just to support Apple and while 10 sits on the sidelines, I still use 9.
I've been using OS X exclusively since a month after it came out (yes, 10.0). I haven't booted into MacOS 9 except a couple of times to run DiskWarrior since, and a few times erly on to burn some stuff with toast.
I switched my in-laws to 10.2 and they loved it, and they are about as neophyte as computer users get. OS X was a relief for them.
