Have you ever wondered what happened to the G1 and the G2 label? Why did
they start with G3? Why not G1? When G3 first came out, I thought perhaps

603, and a 604, which messed up my theory.
Actually your quite right, the G3 moniker stands for generation 3 Power PC CPU (the small square but that is the brain in the computer). Generation 1 was the 601 (I think there was a 602 as well but it was never used in a Mac). Generation 2 was the 603 and 604 CPUs, which were developed along similar lines to each other (and used along similar lines by Apple). The 603 was a lower power unit with less oomph and no Multi-Processor capability, while the 604 was a more heavyweight power CPU with MP capability (I've seen Mac clones with 8 604 CPUs running simultaneously!). The G3 was developed from the 603e and the G4 was, as far as I know a new chip from the outset.
I also thought that perhaps if
G3 stood for third generation, maybe it was because it followed the NeXT
generation in someone's line of reasoning. Obviously, you would have first,
NeXT, and third, right?
Not quite :D. I think it was the IBM/Motorola contingent that names the G3, but Apple stuck with the 'G' name after they stopped.
Any thoughts on this, or am I the only one that wonders about these things?
I wondered some time ago and, as you can see, found out the answer :).
