The "G" names started as shorthand for the chips and were, as 
suspected, based on generations. Which is easier to remember, 
Motorola MPC740A or G3, Motorola MPC7455 or G4, IBM PowerPC 970 or 
G5? It is sort of like Intel and their x586, x686, or Pentium, 
Pentium II.
