Took me two tries to get a Combo drive working in my B/W G3 450. First bought a Samsung, but OS X wouldn't burn using Finder. Then got a Toshiba and it works in all aspects of burning. I found this info on a great site:

I had an unsupported Toshiba combo drive that I changed the burn support document to allow Finder and iTunes burning. Toast had seen it fine. The standard Toshiba support is for a CDRW, but not for the combo part number (SD-R1012 vs SD-R1002). Now it's in a FW case and all the computers here can use it. Well, at least the firewire computers can.
