As I stated in an earlier post: Also, I recently read an online
article saying that the main problem with the cheap ink is that it
fades quickly (estimated from 1-2 years), whereas most major ink brands
last 25-90 years.
Am I the only one worried about quit fading of photographs?
If you're actually worried about this that much, you wouldn't be printing these photos on an inkjet at all. You'd be using a colour laser -- or at the very least special "archival" inks and paper.
I've got plenty of material I printed out several years ago lying around, and none of it has faded as far as I can see -- but then it's not been left in the sun or exposed to moisture.
I think that the online article you read was bunkum. Major-brand ink and "generic" cartridges are exactly the same. Now, if they were talking about the difference between "archival" ink and regular ink, then they're on to something.
Chas,
Here's the link to the article (from PC World) plus title:
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,111767,00.asp
"Cheap Ink Probed
Our tests show third-party ink cartridges for brand-name printers can produce quality prints, but they'll fade fast. Part two of a series.
Dan Littman From the September 2003 issue of PC World magazine"
So, Chas, what documentation do you have to support your contention that, "Major-brand ink and 'generic' cartridges are exactly the same"?
The article I am citing provides provides documentation and testing to support it's contention that cheap ink FADES FAST. Can you do the same??
Also, I think your statement, "If you're actually worried about this that much, you wouldn't be printing these photos on an inkjet at all. You'd be using a colour laser -- or at the very least special "archival" inks and paper" is pure bunk!!!!
Yes, I care about my photos (mostly 5x7's that I really like and frame and hang on the wall). Yes I would rather they last 25-90 years rather than a few months to 2 years. Yes, 25-90 years is enough for photographs I care about. yes, yes, yes. Inkjet is used by many many people for printing photographs they care about, but the fading issue is a big one: both the paper and the ink chosen are important considerations.
I VERY MUCH await your answer, as I very much want to be convinced that the PC World article is pure BS. I would love to believe that the cheap ink is the same as the expensive stuff, but i need more than your anecdotal and non-documented response to be able to do so.
Thanks,
Dale
