From the September 2003 issue of PC World magazine"

So, Chas, what documentation do you have to support your contention
that, "Major-brand ink and 'generic' cartridges are exactly the same"?

Well, first of all, I have my own experience with prints made that have lasted more than four years.

Second, I have the good sense to not to read advertiser-driven trash like PC WORLD magazine.

Third, I have the good sense to be able to distinguish between archival-quality materials, printers and inks, and impermanent materials, having worked in printing and publishing for many years, working on magazines, journals and books -- including a few photography-oriented/"coffee-table" books.

The article I am citing provides provides documentation and testing to
support it's contention that cheap ink FADES FAST. Can you do the
same??

Yes. I can point you to a class on elemental logic and deduction.

The PC WORLD article bought cheap ink from TWO vendors (neither of which are favoured by any Mac people) and discovered that (lo and behold) the vendors sold them crap. Shocking.

Dale, how does this "prove" that ALL "cheap ink" will produce the same result? Oh wait ... it doesn't.

The article is certainly valuable in terms of helping me avoid crooks, as "Computer Friends" and "PrintPal" would seem to be. But the article completely fails to make the leap that you did and judge ALL third-party makers of inks to be charlatans.

Also, I think your statement, "If you're actually worried about this
that much, you wouldn't be printing these photos on an inkjet at all.
You'd be using a colour laser -- or at the very least special
"archival" inks and paper" is pure bunk!!!!

Fine. Personally, I find it quite amusing that you think buying expensive inkjet printer ink (tested to last for decades) will somehow magically protect your paper from ever aging, yellowing or deteriorating. Again, you might want to find a night school that has some logic courses. You're clearly in need of a brushing-up.

Yes, I care about my photos (mostly 5x7's that I really like and frame
and hang on the wall).

Great! Take these images to a reputable photo store and have prints made of them. Be sure to specify that you'd like them to use archival-quality paper. Using an inkjet to preserve your precious memories is like scratching your autobiography into the sand on the beach.

I VERY MUCH await your answer, as I very much want to be convinced that
the PC World article is pure BS.

Actually, you're (half) right: I should have said that your leaps of logic based on the conclusions of the PC World article are pure bunkum. The article itself is fine for what it does, which is compare ink from TWO vendors (amazingly poor journalism) against the name brands and draw some highly skeptical conclusions from that extremely limited test. This is comparable to writing an article that says the following:

"If you enjoy burgers, you might want to consider buying only filet mignon in the future. We compared filet mignon steak to hamburgers from McDonald's and Burger King and found them lacking."

Sadly, this is the level of writing I've come to expect from PC World, which has been more and more advertiser-driven as the economy has worsened for magazines (and no, they're not the only ones). There was a time, maybe a long time ago now, where editorial and advertising were kept very strictly separated. Such is no longer the case in many publications, and it's a real shame.

I would love to believe that the
cheap ink is the same as the expensive stuff, but i need more than your
anecdotal and non-documented response to be able to do so.

Actually, believe whatever the hell you want. But if you can take anything I say to heart, take this:

People who are seriously concerned about leaving a lasting legacy of literature do NOT use Microsoft Publisher.
People who are seriously concerned about creating world-class artwork do NOT use AppleWorks.
People who are seriously concerned about preserving important photography do NOT print them out on consumer inkjet printers.
