I've seen 3 iMacs with similar problems, each had a defective P/A/V board.
In each case I knew where the problem was, but the defective part on the
P/A/V board couldn't be sourced so an exchange board was fitted. The CRT
base connector wasn't gripping the CRT's heater pins tightly, so as the
heater voltage disappeared the display image would slowly fade to black.
Scraping the CRT's pins or bending them out slightly to achieve a tighter
fit didn't work.
