Just a note I found which may help some others in the future.

I have an eMac 1GHz and iMac 400, and tonight felt a good time to backup important stuff, and as I didn't have a crossover cable at all, transferring 8GB over my 10baseT network wasn't looking to be much fun.

However!

I didn't know until taking a look at the kbase article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42717 that now the newer eMacs and some iMacs have autosensing for crossover/straight through cables. Not only that, quite a few other macs do now too.

I'd seen even as recently as a month ago advice posted in forums online that mentioned only gigabit ethernet macs have this autosensing, and was repeating it in my own mind - going straight to the source saved me several hours copying :). So for those who may need it sometime in the future none of the following need crossover cables:

Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) and later
Xserve and later
Power Mac G5
PowerBook G4 and later

iMac (17-inch 1GHz)
eMac (ATI Graphics)
iBook (Dual USB) and later
AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet)
AirPort Extreme Base Station
