It's worth noting that if you have two machines that both have Firewire
on them that are in relatively close proximity to each other, you can
achieve VASTLY faster transfer speeds with a FW cable and "FW Target
Disk Mode". I don't have the KnowledgeBase article bookmarked, but it's
very straightforward:

1. Connect two macs via firewire.
2. Restart one of them, holding down the T key.
3. After a short time, the hard drive of the restarted Mac will show up
on the other Mac.
4. Drag and copy files at amazing speeds.
5. IMPORTANT: when finished, unmount the mounted "guest" HD by dragging
it to the trash BEFORE disconnecting the machines!

True - the transfer speeds are pretty incredible, even after you've been looking at a 100bT ethernet connection. You don't have to have them connected before you do the restart - just start one with the T key down, and it turns itself into an external firewire drive. Then you can dismount, unplug, and hook it up to another machine too. I've been able to do this using my PowerBooks this way to move larger files.
