My son has the original iPod.......is the newer version much of an upgrade or just a bigger HD and a few bells and whistles?

iPod update 1.3.1 for non dock models is available from software update. Since we have iPod's of both flavors I have both 1.3.1 and 2.1 on my G4 running 10.3 and all works fine. Each iPod seems to know which update applies and there have been no issues.
