That sounds similar to what I'm seeing, only my light never turns to
green, the iMac never shuts off, and I can't get video via the internal
video port.

So I'm not sure if this is in fact a flyback issue or not.

I do find it interesting that their symptoms indicate that the flyback
shorts out and causes the iMac to turn off... but they do list as a
possible repair the ability to use the internal video with an external
monitor. If the iMac turns itself off, how exactly is one supposed to
keep it running long enough to use the video with another monitor. That
seems to contradict itself.

Looks like I'm in for a long session of testing voltages at various
points in the system. Something I was trying to avoid doing due to lack
of time. But since there doesn't appear to be a clear answer as to what's
wrong, I don't think I have a choice but to start testing the possible
failures and rule them out.
