I guess with an external FW hard drive the above point becomes moot.
I haven't installed any fonts so that's not a consideration, but how
would I know if I have any items that sit outside the User folder?

This is a really good question and I think it would benefit everyone to know.

Basically, there are four things that sit outside the User Folder that the average user would probably want to back up. The first two are obvious: The Applications folder, and the Documents folder (the latter holds a bevy of preferences in some cases, and in any event it does no harm to back it up).

The second two are trickier: Fonts you've installed that you made available to all users, which live in /Library/Fonts, and "haxies" or third-party preference panes, iTunes Plug-Ins and suchlike (again that are made available to all users -- you are generally asked about this during installation), which live in /Library/PreferencePanes or /Library/iTunes/Plug-ins or something like that.

I generally just back up the whole dang /Library folder.

I believe that Retrospect also can do this now, it's called a
"Duplicate" and it's bootable.

I'm sure you're right, I'm out of touch with Retrospect these days. Not sure why you'd buy a $70+ dollar program to do THAT, though, when CCC is free to use (donationware) and actively supported.

You can also, still do the
traditional "Backup" where it keeps all the various versions in a
compressed file. I understand that each has it's advantages and
disadvantages.

Well, certainly there are situations where a compressed backup is a great advantage. But with hard drive prices what they are these days, most of us could easily afford a drive twice as large as the one in our machines presently.

Now, that you've taken the time to help me with all this I'll have to
say that I agree. It was the not really knowing what's what, that
was giving me the hard time. Now, that I have a better idea, I think
I'll go ahead with the external FW hard drive idea. Thanks!

Have fun!
