I finally got around to reading that article and I was also a bit puzzled by that as no one else ever seems to recommend doing it that way. I wrote to Kevin at Small Dog asking him about that and he said (paraphrasing here) it was so you could use one hard drive instead of two as you need to boot from a drive other than the one you're cloning for it to work. Hope this helps to clear up the confusion.
