Well, if you are I am missing the same thing. I have some .avi files and if
you double click on them Quicktime opens up then errors out. It is missing
something. VLC will open them but it maxes out my 400.
Is there any way to convert them to mpeg?
Yes. VLC itself has a little-known method for converting files, and there are a couple of tools specifically for this, though neither of them are as Mac-friendly as I'd like:
- ffmpegX can convert nearly anything to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2.
- MPEG2Works is an up-and-comer that simplifies the process considerably, but has a lower success rate.
- There's another tool called Gumby that I haven't really tested yet, but it's out there.
Have a look around Versiontracker.com, Macupdate.com or Google to track down these tools.
