I run Mac OS X.2.6 with QuickTime 6.4 but I can play very
few movie files, only a select MPEGs, never any AVI and not
even a number of other MPEG files.

I use MPlayer. http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/

It's played everything I want, so far.

Thank you, I will try it, but I am very surprised that I have always had problems playing so many movie files with QuickTime Movie player, when any PC seems to be able to play them all without special software...
