I went to the gimp site, but don't find anything about how to WORK it, or whether it might (if I could work it) support the 1520.
Is there an easy explanation somewhere?

...Have you checked Gimp-Print to see whether an OS X driver is available for your printer? I downloaded and installed the driver for my Epson Stylus Photo 700 and it works beautifully.
