On the one iMac I hit this with, it did NOT happen right away. It 
happened after about a dozen reboots. I had OS X totally installed, and 
was doing some final tweaking when it happened.

So maybe it is just the firmware bug and it didn't crop up until later 
for them either.

Of course, if it isn't the firmware bug, chances are it is something else 
in the display circuits... which means the logic board may still be fine. 
Yank it, connect a hacked ATX power supply, and use it in some custom 
case (or give it to me and I'll do that). This of course assumes it is a 
model with VGA out, but you do mention it is a DV model, and I think they 
all had the VGA output on the back.
