Sounds like a classic case of heat stroke. Trouble is is that the Rage 128 chip needs some sort of heat sink. Mine in my G3/400 got to the stage where I could almost make toast on it at some intervals (mostly while playing Quake 3) so it may have irreversibly damaged the chip. The 7200-rpm hard disk is probably generating just that little extra amount of heat that stops everything going right.
