There's a great program out there which isn't free, but I don't remember it costing that much either. It's called "Doorstop" and its companion app, "who's there?". These two apps are designed for someone with wideband access without a firewall. It blocks attempts to enter your computer. These apps keep a log of attempts, and I can tell you that there are more than 30 a day. Doorstop blocks and Who's There? enables you to track the hacker to their network administrator or their site. It also enables you to send an email to Web authorities if someone is continuously trying to gain access. I used it for a few years until I bought a router which in addition to it's routing function gives me a hardware firewall.
Most people snooping around to gain entrance are aiming at PC's but there are some who are aiming for Macs--not too many. This software will open your eyes to the quantity of activity to gain access into any unguarded port.
