Also, I appreciate the heads up on the date and time. When
I checked, the computer had reverted back to 1970 - maybe
it is time for a new battery.  Haven't replaced it since I made
the purchase in early 2000.  I usually pull the plug each night
which may have taken its toll.

That's the problem. You shouldn't be doing that, it drains the battery.


A *much* better idea is to leave it plugged in ... to a UPS unit (which start at under $30).

Also, as of OS X it is no longer necessary -- or even desirable -- to shut down the computer. Simply let it sleep.
