That's the problem. You shouldn't be doing that, it drains the battery.
A *much* better idea is to leave it plugged in ... to a UPS unit (which start at under $30).
Also, as of OS X it is no longer necessary -- or even desirable -- to shut down the computer. Simply let it sleep.
