I've been trying to put it off, but alas, I'm in a situation where I have to
buy a PC computer or get Virtual PC . I'd rather NOT buy a PC if I can
avoid it, but would appreciate input from those with experience whether
the Virtual PC program works okay, or is it a big pain?

It largely depends on two things:

1. What you need it for
2. What hardware you're running

1.
If you want to use it for hardware specific things (as I tried to do at
University while studying electronics) you're better off with a real PC,
but if it is pretty normal PC only software, fine.

2.
The faster Mac, the better, the more memory, the better. Simple!
---
Also, I notice they offer three versions: Windows XP Pro;
Windows XP Home and Windows 2000.
Any suggestions on this aspect?

All depends on your needs. You'll have to decide what your needs are and then look at what each OS version offers.
