I've been trying to put it off, but alas, I'm in a situation where I have to
buy a PC computer or get Virtual PC . I'd rather NOT buy a PC if I can
avoid it, but would appreciate input from those with experience whether
the Virtual PC program works okay, or is it a big pain?

Running Virtual PC is as easy as running any other Mac application. I've had no trouble at all with it (running Win2000). The big problem is that it's SLOW. If you have a fast G4 and lots of RAM, you may not even notice the slowness, but on anything less, it's quite noticeable.

The other piece of advice I'll offer is that if you're wanting to emulate a PC in order to play games, STOP. Virtual PC won't help you. Buy a cheap PC with a good video card (or a Playstation/Xbox/Gamecube) for that sort of thing.

Also, I notice they offer three versions: Windows XP Pro; Windows XP Home
and Windows 2000. Any suggestions on this aspect?

I prefer Win2000 because of it's un-XP look (and when I bought it), but I suppose the most logical choice for a user today is the most recent OS, ie XP Pro. I've been told by reliable sources that given the above choice, XP Home should be your LAST option.
