You are probably right about speed degradation, but we are talking
about download from imac to ipod.

My iPod (the original) holds 5GB. Downloading that over USB 1.1 will take something over an hour. The 20GB one will take five hours. If that's the machine she has to work with, then that's what she has--I just wanted you to realize we might be talking kind of perceptibly slow. I think Firewire is around 8 times faster than USB 1.1 (though slower than USB 2).

Now if it's a USB 2 to Firewire thing, maybe it runs faster....
It wasn't clear from the link I saw just how it worked.

I think it's slower than that.....USB runs at 12 mbits per second, or about 1.5 mbytes per sec (rated top speed with nothing else on the bus). FireWire is 400 mbits per second, or about 50 mbytes per second. A little better than 30 times faster, at their rated speeds, YMMV. The 5GB iPod has 5 million bytes, which theoretically takes 17 minutes to fill at full FW speed (5M/80/60/60). That seems to be less time than mine takes, but an iPod is moving a lot of small files instead of one large one.
Basically, it would take you the better part of a day to fill up an iPod over USB.
Someone correct me on the math if I'm way off here......I'm sure you will. ;-]
