It may not be that bad? Recently we purchased a new iMac for junior grade daughter. Her Summer 2000 G3 350 was due for replacement. Since the ethernet was dead on hers, due to a lightning surge, I transferred her entire HD, including an iTunes collection of 1700+ songs to an external HD using USB 1.1 and Carbon Copy Cloner. Her complete HD had just over 8 GB of stuff on it.

It took just over 4 hours to transfer everything, including the iTunes files. Not a speedy process, but it worked, and was not as bad as I expected.

That's good. It's more than I would download from the iMac at any one time except if I were doing what you did... which I actually did via ethernet to my S900, to back up the 4GB of data on the iMac.
