When you get back to OS 9 go to system profiler and check the firmware is
version 4.19f, if not update it. You will need OS 9.1, 9,2,1 or 9.2.2
installed to do this. Replacing the hard disk won't resolve this potential
problem as the firmware resides in the logic board.

Just to add to this - "firmware" is listed as "boot ROM version" under "production" info.

Hi list and all who have offered help. Thank you.

I was finally able to start up with an OS 9 install disk. The monitor prefs are corrupted and the machine was starting up sometimes with a very dark gray screen. I finally used my ears to hear the whine of the CD start while holding the C key and then let go. This worked. Previously, since I couldn't see a screen, except for those times that Jaguar showed up with the log in as a guest choice, I assumed that there was no start up and over-held the C key which negated the start up. I wiped the drive and re-installed 9.1 and 9.2.1 and am ready to do 9.2.2. I still have strange screen sizes showing up but the color and physical distortions are gone. I probably need to open the guy up again and push the button to clear the corruption that zapping the PRAM doesn't seem to do as well. That is how I got rid of the distortions the first time. There is something else that might be re-corrupting the monitor settings. The monitor is capable of looking like new. But when it reverts to a small screen size and I touch the Monitor CP in 9, The screen immediately goes very dark gray. Thanks to all again.
