Firstly, I want to say that I did today receive a response from PowerLogix. They say they discontinued the iForce SL G3/900 a mere 9 months after introduction because of low demand. So Jeff, you're right. I had noticed that they were making the Pismo G3/900's, and I am considering that for my Pismo <smile>. I wonder if the G3 chips they use for these upgrades are just getting rare? If it's truly a matter of low sales demand, I think they're AHEAD of the curve here. The iMac DV's are only 3-4 years old, and many users like me are surely only now getting to the point where they want more speed.
Stacy's comments are intriguing. I've not used Panther yet, but the slowdown I experienced on my Pismo going from 9.2.2 to Jaguar was so mindnumbing that I hesitate to upgrade it any further. I used parallel reasoning for my iMac. But if Panther will bring back the speed of 9.2.2 on my Pismo, that would be great! (I will still be considering a Pismo processor upgrade when my AppleCare runs out in a few months.) I am currently using 9.2.2 on my iMac, however. If Panther brings more speed to my iMac... then maybe I don't really need an upgrade there. But I'm guessing the G4 upgrade to the iMac DV you mention, Stacy, would further benefit Panther speed because of alti-vec awareness that must surely be built-in to Panther (or even Jaguar).
Charles caught me on the same issue, but "sideways": I didn't really think that an upgrade was REQUIRED to run Jaguar, though I see how my wording implied it. Because of the above-noted mindnumbing slowdown between 9.2.2 and Jaguar on my Pismo, I figured that a similar slowdown would happen when I install Jaguar on the iMac DV. And the iMac is just slow enough under 9.2.2 that I'm slightly annoyed as it is. I want a version of X on my iMac now, and I'm presently only comfy with Jaguar, so that's why I was looking at it. But I won't tolerate further slowdown on the iMac. To address Charles' other points, I already have 640MB of RAM on this, so that's fine. I do plan to upgrade the HD, so thanks for your advice there.
So here's the puzzle now: Is it really true that if I go from 9.2.2 to Panther on my iMac DV that I will experience no slowdown? If so, then I'll do it. But if there's even a 10% slowdown, I'll want to upgrade the processor or just look into getting an eMac. What do you folks think??

After reading the user comments on xlr8yourmac.com, I decided on the G3/900. Alas! This upgrade seems to have vanished, a mere 9 months after being introduced! Anyone know what happened? Even on ebay I find nothing. I emailed to PowerLogix, but have received no reply.

Actually, if you go with Panther, it's extremely usable on a G3/400mhz. I run it on a G3/350mhz, and I'm absolutely amazed with how well it runs. It smokes my old-world souped up PowerMac 9600 G4/800mhz with Radeon 7000 32MB video card. I knew my old machine was crippled with the slower bus speed, but I never dreamed a G3/350mhz iMac would run circles around it.... I'm thinking about going the TechnoWarehouse G4 route myself.

Yeah, they appear to have discontinued it. They're still offering the G3/900 "Bluechip" upgrade for Pismos, which uses the same chip. I'm guessing they either had some technical problems with the iForce SL or else they didn't get enough orders to warrant continuing to offer it.

First tell me why you think you need a processor upgrade to run Jaguar (or Panther, which is what you should be running). I've seen Panther and Jag running on iMacs slower and faster than yours with no problems. The secret is a) Lots and lots of RAM and b) a faster, larger HD than the stock one you probably have.
