I have a graphite 400dv Imac. my imac has been down for a few months now. It started by freezing up on me. one day it just decided not to start up. when i turn it on i see a file folder icon in the middle of the screen. Inside this folder it flashes alternatly the mac face and a question mark. Also there is a cd in the cd rom that i am not able to remove. many people have said that there is a pinhole that when pushed will release it. i have removed the cd rom completely and cannot find anything like this. Also i have tried the programer button on the side and boot it like that with no use.
Have you tried the common method of holding down the mouse button while turning on the computer? It sometimes take a minute or so, but the CD should eject that way.
As for the other problem, it sounds like your system folder or possibly your whole hard drive is corrupted. Something to try is zapping the PRAM, by holding Cmd, Option, P, and R while powering on, and continue holding until the machine chimes 3 times, leaving go and allowing the machine to power on after the 3rd chime.
If that doesn't work, try to boot from a System CD (provided you get the one that's "stuck" in it removed, insert a system disc, power off, and power back on while holding the C key) and run the disc utilities provided on the disc to see what's going on. You can even try "re-blessing" the System folder by dragging it to the desktop, then dragging it back into it's correct place. I've never had to do this, but I've read that it works for others in similar instances. Failing all that, if you can at least get the thing to boot from a system CD, then you can try re-installing the OS.
