Hi,

I have a graphite 400dv Imac. my imac has been down
for a few months now. It started by freezing up on me.
one day it just decided not to start up.

Mmm, sounds a bit sick.

 when i turn
it on i see a file folder icon in the middle of the
screen. Inside this folder it flashes alternatly the
mac face and a question mark.

Flashing question mark means that the Mac is unable to find a System Folder. (What OS do you have installed?)

Also there is a cd in
the cd rom that i am not able to remove.

There are a few things you can try for ejecting the CD. One is to hold the mouse button down on start-up, but I don't know if this will work in your current situation. (Will have a better chance of working after you have found a System Folder.)

 many people
have said that there is a pinhole that when pushed
will release it.

Don't know about this, on that model.

i have removed the cd rom completely
and cannot find anything like this.

?? Removed the drive assembly from the machine, you mean?

What happens when you try re-setting PRAM? (Apple/Option/P/R/ at start-up.)
