I have the same machine and the same thing happened recently. THIS time it
had something to do with the CD that was stuck in the drive. Once I ejected
the CD and restarted, it found the system folder...whew.

There is a very small hole to the far right end of the slot. You just stick
the end of a paper clip in the hole while the machine is powering up and the
disk will eject. If you don't see the hole, just stick the paper clip end in
about a half inch and gently push till you hear the motor.
