Hi Chris,
Probably not the last days of your iMac. Try swapping the ram. If the 256 works in the lower and the 32 in the upper, swap the 256 in the lower with your new 256 in the upper. Assuming they are both low density, they should be interchangeable. If this is confusing, what I am trying to say is that if a 256 works in the lower, it will probably work in the upper and vice versa. You need to keep trying until you see which dimms work. Ram in a rev A or B (or C or D) can occasionally be picky. If you can not get you two 256 MB dimms to work, the ram vendor is the culprit, not your iMac. i have successfully gotten 512MB in over a half dozen iMacs (Rev A and B) to be recognized.

I didn't try to save any money on the RAM really. I am pretty certain the source is good, they sell RAM specifically for Macs and not at any significantly lower rate.

Hi,
99.999% of the time it is NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE!
The issue is ram density!
Order some ram from crucial, or any ram vendor listed on
"www.ramseeker.com"
If the ram is too dense, the iMac (rev A-rev D) will not recognize it.
Pay a few extra bucks and your 256MB per slot will work as 256MB.
Good luck,

I have recently began to upgrade my RAM. I ordered RAM through
technowarehouse. At first I added a 256MB mod to the upper slot, my
RAM then equaling 288MB. Everything was fine. I later tried today to
add another 256MB to the lower slot. Everything seemed fine, but when
I tried to turn on the computer the start button turned orange and the
computer acted as if it was asleep. So I opened it up and switched
the places of the memory card and tried to start again, same result.
Finally, I took out one 256MB card leaving one in the lower slot and
added the 32MB card to the upper slot and restarted my computer and it
worked fine. I figured it was bad RAM and shortly received a
replacement. So i again tried to add the new 256 mod. No luck, the
start button turned orange and the computer looked asleep. I tried
every available combination, and even returned to the original RAM I
had previously and the computer refuses to start. Can anyone help me
out of this quagmire. I am exceedingly frustrated and worried that my
iMac has seen its last days.

Chris
