Your iMac can only take 384 megs of ram total, if its the one I am thinking about. Check www.lowendmac.com.
FWIW, in my experience, Mactracker is a reliable source of info on maximum RAM for iMacs.
If you buy RAM from a reputable dealer who supplies you with the proper modules, you should be able to achieve this:
Rev A iMacs - 256 MB (maybe more, if you are lucky like Chris. :-) The rest of the trayloaders - 512 MB The rest of the CRT iMacs, and the early LCDs - 1 Gig Recent LCD iMacs - 1.5 Gigs
