I didn't try to save any money on the RAM really.  I am pretty certain the source is 
good, they sell RAM specifically for Macs and not at any significantly lower rate.

Hi,
99.999% of the time it is NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE!
The issue is ram density!
Order some ram from crucial, or any ram vendor listed on 
"www.ramseeker.com"
If the ram is too dense, the iMac (rev A-rev D) will not recognize it.
Pay a few extra bucks and your 256MB per slot will work as 256MB.
