Thanks for your responses, but the second after I
sent the email out, the computer died completely.
It was exactly as you said: flyback transformer on
video analog board. 

I got it fixed in less than 24 hours by a local
San Francisco repair outfit, The Total Mac. They
put in a refurbed board, and I'm back in business
for a about $290. The image is a tiny bit skewed
along the bottom edge, but I think I can live with that.

Another person recommended that I get a new
computer and put my old hard drive in an enclosure.

All good advice.
