That cracking sound usually means high voltage. Quite often, it is arcing
over some dust around the flyback transformer or the high voltage wiring.
Cleaning this area carries the risk of shock unless you know how to
discharge the voltage safely.

Fortunately, the worst thing that will likely happen is that the problem
will grow more and more frequent until at some point the display dies. Your
hard drive should be regularly backed up so that you don't have to worry
about when that happens. Then you can start with another machine (the cost
of repair would be too high).
