Most (all?) recent Macs have "auto-sensing" Ethernet. If your new iBook is one of these models, a straight-thru cable will suffice for networking the two computers.

That is what I thought, too. I have an original iMac Rev. B, and a G4 iMac Flat Panel. A straight cable won't work between them; I have to use a crossover cable. The explanation I was given is that BOTH iMacs must have auto-sensing for straight cable to work. I don't know when auto-sensing ethernet was added to the iMacs, in the last G3s or only with the G4s?
