From: Dale Critchley <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Congrats!
I just ordered a refurb eMac 1GHz combo drive to replace my 8100. :^D It'll
be here in 6-10 business days.
I have a few questions:The list is pretty small. Basically, if it worked directly with hardware (fax programs, for example), it may not work right in Classic. Printing seems to be working just fine, but any other sort of interaction with hardware seems to be problematic.
Is there a list somewhere of software that will work in OS 9 but not "Classic"? I've heard of such beasts....
I haven't seen anything from my days in OS 9 that refused to work outright in Classic, including Quark 4, Photoshop 4 and some very old games (one goes back to 1988!).
Will they all be able to go online that way, even though it's dial-up (speed issues noted)?
Dude! It's time to seriously look into broadband. Unless it's not available in your area, I'd strongly recommend it for this sort of setup. The difference is like night and day.
What are the pros/cons of using the eMac as an AirPort base station insteadThe eMac must be left on (and not sleeping) all the time, which could shorten the life of the machine. Again, I'd suggest not going the ultra-cheap route and springing for a base station.
of a dedicated one?
Anything else I need to know/be warned of as someone transitioning from OSBUY SCOTT KELBY'S BOOK!! I can't yell this loud enough. You will thank me profusely later!
9.1 on a 8100/G3 to an eMac running OS X 10.3? eMac-specific caveats?

What's the easiest way to transfer all my stuff from one to the other,Basically, yes.
especially thinking about stuff that's going to mess up Classic? Should I
just forget about 3rd party extensions, etc.?
Trust me when I tell you that you are going to be largely (not completely, but mostly) abandoning Classic faster than you ever thought possible. All the software is right there in OS X to take care of your basic needs, and no matter how beloved your OS 9 software was, you'll find yourself LEAPING to the new stuff as fast as your ability to learn will allow. It's really THAT MUCH BETTER.
What must-have (pref. freeware) apps should I know about as a new OS X user?Carbon Copy Cloner -- A MUST for good clones (complete backups) onto external or hard drives. Yes, you need an external FW hard drive. Again, trust me. You need this. People who fly without backups are asking for disaster. It's not that OS X is unreliable -- FAR from it -- it's that hard drives are mechanical devices and will eventually fail, just as surely as a tire will go flat or a bulb will burn out.
Check Preference Files -- a new free tool to help resolve the one lingering annoyance in OS X -- the ability of preference files to cause problems.
OnyX -- there are several similar tools, this one happens to be my choice. It's "AutoPilot" function does a number of "tidying" operations on the hard drive that will keep it humming. Run roughly once a month.
ABMenu -- shareware that keeps your Address Book data right on the menubar. I love it.
TextEdit (included with the OS) -- don't overlook this fabulous word processor! You can use it in "plain text" mode (ideal for HTML editing or email/newsgroup message composing), and you can use it in "RTF" mode, which gives you a lot of formatting options. It's much more powerful than people realise, yet it does not go beyond being a good, basic word processor. It even reads and writes MS Word files!
Oh, and don't forget to explore the iTunes Music Store, iCal and iChatAV -- life-changing stuff!
Do I need something extra to sync my Palm T|T3 via BlueTooth, or does thatIt does not work with Airport. Bluetooth is a separate short-range wireless protocol. It should work with Palm Desktop or, if you're a .Mac member, iSync just fine once you "pair" the devices.
work with AirPort.
What's the easiest way to import video from my VHS home movies? I want toThen the easiest way is to have a professional do it. Probably the most cost-effective way as well.
get a SuperDrive soon and convert them all to DVD. No, my camcorder doesn't
have USB or FireWire.
If you're determined to do it yourself, then buy the Canopus ADV-1000 for around $250, hook your VCR to it and import the movies using iMovie, then edit and burn using iDVD.
I know, I sound like a total newbie, even though I've been messing with Macs
since 1994 and Apples since 1982. But this is a whole 'nother ballgame.
Yes it is, but if you don't get intimidated you'll quickly find that the old Mac "magic" of look and feel are still there ...
