I don't know how much help this will be...

I'm using DSL -- pacbell.

I went to the System Preferences, then to Network, to see what you're talking about. My DSL is working fine; Built-In Ethernet is not grayed out.

I switched to Network Port Configurations, and found I had Internal Modem, not checked, at the top, then Built-In Ethernet, checked, below it. I immediately dragged that one to the top, because I haven't used the Internal Modem in years.

Off to the right, there are three selector buttons, New... Duplicate and Delete. What I would try, if it was me, would be to create a New configuration, calling it Built-In Ethernet, and go from there.

I guess what might happen there for you, would be it would try to get you to assign the configuration to either Internal Modem, or Built-In Ethernet, and you would run into the grayed-out problem again...

Sorry if this isn't any help... I would keep trying different things like Duplicate etc., trial and error until it worked.

I would reinstall the DSL software provided by the service you're using, and see if that cleared it up.

Finally I would reinstall the OS -- but you've probably tried that. Archive and install without saving any preferences.

My last guess would be a hardware problem, which is beyond my level of expertise -- looks like you're figuring that's what it is. Hopefully something simple.

Good luck and hope you get it going again soon -- DSL rocks!

Well, cable is better, but...

Eddie

I went to the Apple Support page and looked up the section on DSL. One thing they suggest to do is a hardware check using the hardware test CD. I have come to believe that my problem may be the ethernet port. I don't have an iMac hardware test CD. I suppose an iBook CD wouldn't work? Is there any way to test the ethernet port without the CD?

On the Apple Support it gives the following instructions for establishing DSL connection:

1. Choose Active Network Ports from the Show pop-up menu .

There is nothing called 'Active Network Ports' in the 'Show' menu. There is something called 'Network Port Configurations' however, which does offer the option of 'Built -in Ethernet'. Is it the same thing?

2. Be sure that the checkbox for "Built-in Ethernet" is selected.
3. Drag Built-in Ethernet to the top of the Port Configurations list to make it the preferred, or primary, network interface.
4. Choose Built-in Ethernet from the Show pop-up menu.

I can't do any of these things because 'Built-in Ethernet' is grayed out.

Thanks again,
Tom
