On last night's local news, they had a very brief blurb about a virus that is specific to mac computers. But the story gave no details, such as what it's called or how it affects computers that are zapped.
It did say that Apple has a patch available, yet couldn't find anything
about it when I checked Apple's website.
Has anyone else heard about this so called virus, and if yes, would you please fill me in on the details. Thanks.
Bloody media, they always get things wrong. :)
1. It's not a virus. Not a virus at all. Repeat, NOT A VIRUS. Mac OS X -- still completely free of viruses. Sorry if I'm being repetitive, I'm NOT talking down to you, but to the "media" and the "PC unwashed". I'm giving you ammo for the next time you hear someone erroneously make this claim.
2. It's a security hole that COULD BE exploited. Pretty serious, but no actual occurrences of it BEING exploited are documented. Apple has already patched part of the problem via Software Update (run it if you haven't already), but partial vulnerability remains.
3. If you're concerned about the partial vulnerability (I'm not), there are third-party utilities like Unsanity's Paranoid Android 1.1 that may more fully address the problem (check versiontracker.com for it and others). I think the chances of anyone ACTUALLY attempting to exploit this are slim to none, so I prefer to install Apple's patch, and wait for any further improvements to be either issued on their own or rolled into the next upgrade (10.3.4, which should be coming out any day now).
