Apple says that SATA to PATA adapters aren't supported in the G5s.

The G5s DO have a normal PATA bus for the optical drive, and it's possible
(though not pretty) to attach an ATA/IDE hard drive to that bus.

But come on, if you can afford a G5, you can almost certainly afford a nice
new SATA internal drive.  Then just plug in the old external FireWire drive,
copy the stuff to the new internal drive, and give the old drive to a less
fortunate Mac user. Or sell it on eBay to recoup some of the cost of the new
drive.
