I criticized him because he basically said I should not have offered
support to the person because there was question if the software was
legitly obtained.

When I countered explaining that A: I didn't question it, because my
interpretation of the original email came to a legit conclusion, and not
one of piracy, and that B: it isn't my place to question the legitimacy
of someone's software. I'm not about to preface all responses by first
asking someone to prove they own their software. I prefer to NOT assume
everyone is a criminal and go ahead and answer the question. There is
nothing in the original email that dictates it is pirated software. There
is lack of an OS X CD, which has 1001 reasons why it could be missing,
ONE of which is the software was pirated. And regardless, the person
wanted to know how to get OS 9, not OS X... and they freely stated that
their OS 9 CD was included with their iMac (so unless you want to accuse
them of stealing the iMac, that means it is a legal copy of OS 9)

Tim then countered saying that was a "cavalier" attitude and that I was
in fact encouraging software piracy. He also went into some canned
responses by the software industry about how its all the pirates fault
that software is over priced. And also that there doesn't seem to be a
way for someone that legitly owns a program to not have exact knowledge
of where the CD for it is, and have it on hand right at this moment. And
thus, if the person is unaware of where a CD is, it must be a stolen
program.

So naturally, I responded again, disputing Tim's "facts", and criticizing
him for treating others blindly as a criminal.

If we follow Tim's line of thought, then no software related questions
should be answered here until full proof of software ownership is given
IN ADVANCE.

So then, lets put the matter to rest... the original poster can now reply
explaining if he is in fact pirating OS X. Of course, since there is no
way to know if he is or not, the answer naturally will be along the lines
of the following:

"I bought an iMac, it came with OS 9 and OS X. I had that version of OS X
installed, but lost the password. Since I was unaware of any way to
recover it, I decided to reinstall. I was unable to locate the OS X
install CD that came with my iMac, so I bought a used copy of Jaguar on
the LEM Swap list instead. Now I have Jaguar installed, but would like to
restore my OS 9 ability as well, and I don't know how to do that because
the iMac's restore CDs took care of that automatically, but I can't use
them, because I can't find the OS X CD that it needs for part of the
process. So I was curious if 'Classic' was something I could download
from Apple's web site, or if possibly there was a way to use the OS 9 CD
that came with my iMac, that I was able to find, to restore the use of OS
9 under Jaguar so I can continue to use my OS 9 apps."

There, I just rephrased exactly what the original poster said. Only I
added the little, unverifiable statements, that remove any doubt as to
the legitimacy of the software. That should make Tim happy, unless he
expects receipts for said software to also be furnished before answering
questions.

Like I said, I prefer to have faith in my fellow man and assume they are
honest. I'm not as ready to crucify someone for theft because they didn't
spell out every detail of how and why they do and do not have a
particular CD (which I might add, was STILL immaterial to the actual
question... legit copy of Jaguar or not, the original poster STILL would
need OS 9, and he was very clear that his OS 9 CD was in fact legit).
