I just tried the OCR function on my Epson 2400 for the first time.
VERY easy to use and to edit.
It read all of the characters in a type-written document correctly, except for words that were originally printed in blue and red.
I then changed the scan mode from b&w to color, and all but a couple of the blue/red text were read correctly (e.g., it failed to read the @ sign). The color scan was slower than the b&w.

Hope this helps.
Hi Dale, iMacers, eMacers:
Thank you very much for going to all the trouble of trying this on my account, it's much appreciated.
The reason I even asked about the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo is that I had a Canon CanoScan LiDE 50 on the way from Amazon.com (ordered on the 12th, it finally arrived today) and I think I've discovered major problem concerning the included software. I did a lot of research on scanners before choosing the LiDE 50 but apparently I managed to miss an important fact.
The information I discovered on the Apple Forums is that the bundled Arcsoft PhotoStudio, ArcSoft PhotoBase and ScanSoft OmniPage SE OCR software HAS to be installed on a Mac booted into OS 9. It won't install through Classic, but after installation it will run in classic, but apparently still can't use the scanner directly under classic. My iMac ONLY boots OS X.
The ArcSoft software doesn't matter so much as the scanner also includes ScanGear CS, CanoScan Toolbox and Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 (which are native) but I really was looking forward to doing some OCR. Now that I know that half the software will be unusable, I'm thinking I'd just be better off to send it back without opening it... Bummer.
If I do decide to send it back, the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo will set me back an additional $40 over the cost of the Canon CanoScan LiDE 50. I guess I now have to decide if the Epson's NewSoft OCR functionality makes it worth the extra money...
Thanks again Dale.
