I can't comment on replacing the screen, but an adapter can be 
purchased to allow you to mirror on an external monitor. I think it's 
about $20. Check the Apple store online.

I would appreciate feedback anyone has to offer on the following 
related questions:

(1)  If the crack is tolerable, does it do any harm to run it with the 
cracked screen?

(2)  What would I need to run it in mirror mode on an external CRT 
monitor?

(3)  I haven't seen the crack so I can't give specifics, but is it 
possible to get a replacement part for just the broken part and not 
the whole LCD screen? (Related: where might I find parts for the LCD 
screen and how hard is it take one apart to do the replacement?)

(4)  If I want to replace the whole 17" LCD screen, is my only option 
to go through an Apple dealer?
