(1) If the crack is tolerable, does it do any harm to run it with the cracked screen?
No.
(2) What would I need to run it in mirror mode on an external CRT monitor?A CRT plugged into the video port on the back. I believe mirror mode is the default, but if it isn't you can easily make it so by adjusting the Displays system preference panel.
(3) I haven't seen the crack so I can't give specifics, but is it possible to get a replacement part for just the broken part and not the whole LCD screen?
No.
(Related: where might I find parts for the LCD screen and how hard is it take one apart to do the replacement?)
Not gonna happen.
(4) If I want to replace the whole 17" LCD screen, is my only option to go through an Apple dealer?
To *replace* the screen, then yes your only option is Apple.
To work *around* the screen as you've suggested, you can use any monitor that uses the iMac's video port (can't remember offhand if it's DVI or VGA, but it's a standard at any rate).
