>(1) If the crack is tolerable, does it do any harm to run it with >the cracked screen?
Does it harm anything, no, but LCD cracks will "leak". They will slowly get worse as they are used. What you will usually see is black or other color distortion around the crack, and that area will grow in size. So if you have a small crack in the corner, you might be fine for a little while, but it will get bigger and more annoying (I used a PowerBook 1400 with a cracked screen as a file server for about 6 months. It went from being mostly viewable to mostly unviewable over the course of the 6 months) >(3) I haven't seen the crack so I can't give specifics, but is it >possible to get a replacement part for just the broken part and not >the whole LCD screen? (Related: where might I find parts for the LCD >screen and how hard is it take one apart to do the replacement?) The whole LCD screen would have to be replaced. That doesn't neccessarily mean the whole screen assembly as shipped by Apple. You may be able to get just the LCD unit and swap it into the screen casing. Although it may be about the same price, and FAR easier to just get a whole new assembly. >(4) If I want to replace the whole 17" LCD screen, is my only option >to go through an Apple dealer? Probably not. I'm sure if you checked the various apple parts dealers (check the back of any Mac magazine), you can probably find people selling replacement screens. But it likely be FAR cheaper to buy a 17" or 19" CRT monitor and adaptor and run it in mirror mode. -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
